188 stage Hero's Journey: Joseph Campbell and the Monomyth

Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey is but the latest incarnation (and modern name) of the story structure pattern that is representative of successful and effective stories.

This structural pattern has been known and utilised before Joseph Campbell's analysis (and is therefore not simply a Hollywood construct): Shakespeare used this pattern; stories before Joseph Campbell's time used this pattern (Casablanca, 1942; Red River, 1948).

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007)

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) is a classic example of the 188+ stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth) story structure pattern.

A rough and basic breakdown of this story follows:

The Ordinary Worlds of both Andy and Hank are expressed in their daily lives and money problems: both wives require financing; one has to pay alimony and the other wants to save his marriage. Here, we are also exposed to the Ordinary Self attachments that each Hero has; the wives (which both will ultimately separate from).

The Call to Adventure here is expressed when Andy proposes the robbery to Hank and Refusal is expressed in Hank's resistance to robbing his own parents' jewelry store. This refusal is overcome as Hank's money problems increase. At this point commitment is made explicit and the fact that there is no way back: Andy tells Hank that if he agrees there is no going back.

The First Threshold then is the actual robbery, though editing tricks splice this stage of the story with the initial loop.

The Belly of the Whale in this story is the realization that their mother has been shot and that she is dying in hospital [not Pop].

The Road of Trials begins when Charles decides to let his wife go (there is the initial resistance to this Road of Trials) (this is a dramatic letting go of the Old World and Old Self) and the Road of Trials itself is Charles' intent on discovering who the perpetrators of his wife's death were.
